The Rise of Chinese Investments and Mergers & Acquisitions in the Netherlands

“China is the biggest trading partner and second largest source of investment of the Netherlands outside the EU”, according to a report by NRC Handelsblad (China Foreign Affairs, 2014). In 2014, Chinese enterprises invested 1.1 billion euros in the Netherlands and around 900 million euros had been spent on mergers and acquisitions (Chinadaily, 2015). To meet the growing interest of Chinese enterprises and investors in Mergers & Acquisitions in the Netherlands, the BDO and Dragons Businessclub co-organized the Seminar on Mergers & Acquisitions in The Netherlands on 1 September 2015 at “Wok de Mallejan” in Maarssen.

The evening started with a lively Chinese lion dance and a welcome speech by Mr. Atom Zhou, the Chairman of Dragons Businessclub. He introduced Mr. Dongxu Zhang, Chairman of Hollands-Chinese Kamer van Koophandel, and the team from China Construction Bank, one of the largest commercial banks in China, which opened its new branch in Amsterdam last month, to the audience. Gratitude was given to the event organizing team of BDO and Dragon Businessclub. The introduction ended with a speech by Mr. Marc Groenen, the Partner of BDO Audit & Assurance. He shared with guests a brief introduction of BDO, emphasized the importance of expanding business in the Chinese market, and gave his best wishes to the success of the event.

BDO and its rapid expansion in China

BDO Lixin is the accounting firm that gained the largest business growth (41%) in Chinese market by 2014 comparing to the big four and other accounting firms. Its revenues ranked fourth after PwC China, Deloitte China and Ruihua CPAs, according to a survey by International Accounting Bulletin. To get a better understanding on how BDO provides a full range of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and financial advisory services, two presentations were given by corporate finance advisors Mr. Willem Verhoeven and Mr. Joost Vandenbergh.

Mr. Willem Verhoeven gave a fruitful presentation by introducing the key advisory services they provide during the pre-transaction, the transaction and post-transaction of M&A activities. He highlighted the unique and significant value of their service in helping multinational enterprises to determine strategy and build up synergy during M&A transactions.

Furthermore, Mr. Joost Vandenbergh introduced BDO’s expertise on debt advisory and related financing processes. His presentation illustrated the Bank’s landscape, market development, key characteristic of financing, the process of advisory and a typology of financing alternatives. For example, bank’s financing has been playing a predominate role in the Netherlands and it has brought huge impacts on the debt advisory services. Several cases were provided as examples to explain details.

The presentations were followed by a free Q&A session. Advisors and audiences discussed questions such as how BDO helps clients to search potential purchases and how to handle communication barriers during international projects. After that, guests enjoyed the delicious Chinese dinner buffet and informal networking. The evening finished with a very pleasant lucky draw.

Our sincere gratitude goes to BDO for co-organizing this amazing event. Special thanks go to our lucky draw prize sponsors, including China Times, NLE Nederlands Express, ‘88 Mobile’ and restaurant “Wok de Mallejan”’.
